On the Edges….

I’ve been going to the Outer Banks of North Carolina since 1990 and while it’s meant to be a vacation, I always make it a time to create as well. Each time I have a different experience and I come away with ideas for the next year. This year I had two types of imagery in mind, graphic daytime oceanscapes, and nighttime oceanscapes.

I’ve written about the night oceanscapes previously here. The daytime oceanscape that I have now begun to offer as a 14×20 print matted and framed to 22×28 is one I’ve titled Edges. It is an image I made just before sunrise looking out over the ocean. I composed to achieve an image that has strong edges: sand, sea and sky are all distinct. Each of the layers has a very different feeling, texture and reflectivity. I knew this was an image I would  want to print big and so I used a camera that offered me 21 megapixels and a sharp Canon 17-40mm L lens closed down to maximize depth. The image shines printed on Epson Exhibition Fiber paper.

Know Place Like Home…

The 2011 edition of Photographer’s Market has been out for a little while and I received my copy from the publisher. Last year I had a feature article in the 2010 edition of Photographer’s Market which also appeared in the 2010 Artist’s and Graphic Designer’s Market. This year my article deals with making the most of local opportunities which has been a primary objective of mine since I began to work professionally.

It is still a strategy and a personal working style for me and one that I have seen friends use successfully as well. Lots of good stuff in the 2011 edition, certainly it should be on your bookshelf.

Lancaster, PA is all about the Art and Craft …

Lancaster has really become an arts and fine craft destination. This is no more true than this weekend (Nov. 13-14) as the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen holds their annual holiday time Fine Craft Fair . I will be a part of this group of approximately 120 of the regions finest offering their work to patrons from near and far. I always enjoy being in the same space with the talent which is so evident at these Guild shows. I won’t be leaving empty handed myself.

Galaxy 2010 – Doylestown, PA

Thursday evening was the Opening Reception for the 2010 Galaxy Art Show held at the Courthouse in Doylestown, PA. As an invited artist, I was able to place eight pieces into the exhibit/sale. Once again, NOVA put together a wonderful selection of art, fine craft, and gourmet foods. My daughter Hannah and I tried the food offerings of a variety of local fine cuisine providers and enjoyed taking in the paintings, ceramics, photography, and jewelry.

Materese and I

This year, the featured artist was Materese Roche, a wonderful painter and fellow member of the Artists’ Gallery.  I also had a chance to spend time with other artist friends and thoroughly enjoyed just hanging out with  my daughter Hannah.
