Artist’s Gallery

I am pleased to now be part of Artist’s Gallery in Lambertville, NJ!

Artists’ Gallery is a partnership of eighteen professional visual artists who cooperatively administer, staff and exhibit in our Lambertville, New Jersey location. Our members are established and regionally represented artists with national and international reputations who have been selected for membership by jury.

Since its inception in 1995, the high quality and variety of contemporary and traditional artistic styles has earned Artists’ Gallery a solid reputation among discerning collectors, designers and art writers as a showcase for viewing and purchasing original works of art.

Artist’s Gallery is open Friday thru Sunday. If you are interested in knowing what work I have on exhibit at the gallery, please email me for the list. I am looking forward to working and interacting with this talented group.

Wilmington, Delaware – July 25-26

This weekend I will be with the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen at the Chase Center in Wilmington. One of my favorite venues, this indoor show on the riverfront, is held in an elegant, large expo building. In addition to not having to deal with sales tax, I get to meet people from a different radius than other shows I do. For more information – Fine Craft Fair.

Audubon Art and Craft Festival 2009 – PA

I’m continuing to work on matting and framing in preparation for this weekend’s show – Audubon Art and Craft Festival in Hawley, PA. This is a family jaunt for us and an opportunity to see and meet with artist friends. The show is near Lake Wallenpaupack.

In addition to several superb fine artists, there is a large variety of fine crafts, and live animal presentations. It’s going to be a beautiful weekend and this would be a great way to spend a day.

In the Pool

I have mixed feelings about competition when it comes to art, but I do enter several that are high-profile. The biggest, highest profile competition may be the Natural History Museum/BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year. A few years ago they began accepting submissions over the internet which I much prefer to sending work overseas.

I have the full collection of competition books displaying the winning images and enjoy looking at them often. I admire the work that has been selected and often feel that my style is similar enough to be considered seriously for the competition. This year I received a bit of a confirmation of that. It was nice to find out (through the competition website), that 14 of my 16 images submitted made it to the semi-finals. Now I don’t make images for competition, but I do like being in the pool with some of the best in the world. Maybe next time, I’ll be able to stay in a bit longer.

This is one of the images that made it to the semi-finals (category – Animals in their Environment).

Kutztown Folk Festival – Day 9 and then some

Sure the festival ended last Sunday, another really nice day too. The weather was great, the last weekend attendance was strong and I was happy with the response to my work (especially my newest work). But, the orders I took were an ongoing process until today when I shipped (I use UPS) my last works. There is actually one order left for which I am awaiting frames.

To keep things complete, I will mention that the first print sold on the 9th day was of a chipmunk, an image I titled Lookout. This is a photo I made at Hawk Mountain in PA. He seemed to have a very predictable route along a runway (fallen log) that had a small branch sticking up. Every time he got to this point, whether he was coming or going, he would climb up to the top, look around, and continue on. I pre-composed the image with a background I liked and waited for him to come back. Sure enough. My BA in animal behavior paying off, right?

Kutztown Folk Festival 2009 – Day 8

We’ve been very lucky with weather this week, today may have been the best day yet. I’ve been at this for 8 straight days, it ends tomorrow. Starting Monday I will be preparing, packaging, and mailing orders taken at the show.

What I really appreciated today was that some of my  images that have not received much attention, were being selected. When I am at an event like this, I am at work, so conversation is not always something I can engage in unless it’s work related.  Whether it was about a book someone thought I’d be interested in, a location nearby that I may find fruitful, or my approach to the medium of photography, I enjoyed conversations with several people.

Today, the first print selected was again, Three’s Company. This image hasThree's-Company received a lot of attention at the show which I am pleased about as it is a new piece. The fact that it is snowing in the image adds some drama and people like that there are multiple cardinals in the scene.

Kutztown Folk Festival 2009 – Day 7

I was tired this morning going into day 7 at the festival. Todays crowd was big, as big as I can remember in 4 years. A couple came over who told me they buy each other birthday gifts at the show each year. They select someones work they both like and pick out something for the other to buy as their gift. This year it was me they selected, which was very nice.

The first print purchased today was over a new image that I titled Three’s Company. It is an image I made this past winter during a fairly heavy, wet snow in Bucks County, PA. It has been a well received piece and is one I am offereing in two sizes: 9.75 x 14 matted to 16 x 20, and 14 x 20 matted to 22×28. I used a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and a Canon EF 500mm f4 L IS lens with a Canon 1.4x teleconver.

Kutztown Folk Festival 2009 – Day 6

Six days, I’m feeling the burn (leg muscles). It’s not that I have to stand, I just prefer to. Someday I am sure I will change my mind. Anyway, another great weather day, really couldn’t be nicer. I had several pieces purchased as gifts today, which I greatly appreciate.

The staff at the festival run a smooth ship. We had some tough weather over-night but the grounds looked fine.

Blue-BirdThe first print purchased today was of the image titled Blue Bird. This is a colorful piece that I made in Bucks County, PA. I believe the bird is on an arrowwood bush in fall which offers nice contrast to the bird’s blue tones. I used a  Canon EF 500mm lens with 1.4x teleconverter, on a tripod of course. This was an image made on film (Fujichrome), on a rather overcast day and with a polarizing filter to negate the glare on the leaves.

Kutztown Folk Festival 2009 – Day 5

More than half way done, the festival today was well attended and had great weather (the rain held off!). It was also a frustrating day in ways, something that happens in every long show like this one. Just when I really needed it, a little girl around 8 yrs old came into my display and gave me a big smile and told me she liked my work. She looked through my print bin making interesting comments about several pieces. We talked about her trip recently to Mystic Seaport. I told her I had been there a while back and she asked me if I had tried the fudge there. Apparently, it’s very good.

Icy-StareToday’s first  purchase was part of a two print selection by a couple who first bought my work last year at the festival. They selected Icy Stare and an image of a wolf. Icy Stare was also the first selected piece of day 1. It is an image I made this past winter of a Sharp-shinned Hawk perched on a branch of a snag still showing the remaining ice of a storm that hit a day before.
